Great book by writer of great blog: don't confuse them; book is super handy, and blog helpful, esp. for newbees., October 13, 2010
This review comments on both the BOOK as well as Michael's DAILY BLOG of the same or similar name. Both are set up to help you find free books and give help to lost or confused Kindlers. In the daily BLOG, the helpful links to the product saves typing/searching time. Before Amazon ranked top sellers WITHOUT sifting free books [which was not so long ago] this blog found them for us. Now that Amazon ranks bestseller free books separately, we still get numerous tips on Kindle functions and clarifications. Michael also refers out to other free/cheap sources online besides Amazon. I never would have found SMASHWORDS or tackled MOBIPOCKET, just for two examples, without the gentle and friendly guidance of this blog. I think of the book as my OVERALL guide and the blog as my current and updated info on finding inexpensive and quality sites for books. I bought the book and have subscribed for over a year to the blog: as a result I have 147 free books in my UNREAD collection! So Michael has really saved me some money as well as help me locate great books, some of which I've paid for, too! BOTH Book and Blog are worth every cent. Thanks!

Lots of tips in here, some I was able to see in the Kindle manual (yes I read it) but even more that are not included such as I was able to check in for my flight using my Kindle and display the boarding pass electronically for use on continental air. sure beats having to find a printer when you are in a hotel.

I've had my Kindle for four months....I read through the User Manual early-on....and, like so many others, have found my Kindle one of the best electronic device (and BOOK!) purchases I've ever made.

That said, this engaging and well-done Kindle guide has only deepened my understanding, enjoyment and love of this device. The author's conversational and understanding style makes for exceptionally easy and, most importantly, USEFUL reading. Little More A Than User's Manual, November 16, 2010
If you haven't reading the user's manual that comes free on your Kindle then most of this will be wonderful and helpful information for you. If you have more than skimmed the user's manual, then this will be a disappointment - as it is simply a regurgitation of what is already there. Of course there were a few helpful hints and I did pay only 99 cents for this - so I have to put the cost and content into perspective. Because of the low cost, and the sprinkling of a few things that weren't in the user's manual, I gave it a 3 star... otherwise it would've been much less. I would recommend, however, the author's blog 'Free Kindle Books Plus a Few Other Tips' - which I gladly rated a 5 star!

I just did a quick read of this book and found so many helpful tips and suggestions. I am not extremely computer literate, but I believe the instructions provided are detailed enough that even I would be able to follow them. I had no idea that a Kindle could do so many things. This is a valuable guide for any Kindle owner.

No brainer, Great guide for Kindle Lovers +++, December 3, 2010
Listen: this is a no-brainer for many of us with no brains. Absolutely the Best .99 investment I could make in learning to use and protect the Kindle. In the first few minutes I found ideas that I applied immediately, for example: How many have considered what happens when you've LOST your Kindle - yes really walked off and left it somewhere in a distraction? Don't tell me you haven't ever done this with a cell phone, I know you better... The guide's suggestion to register the first name and phone number to appear on the owner's home page is priceless.

And I found out how to turn the Kindle off when I'm finished, duh. Again how many don't know how and have to wait for the sleep mechanism to shut it down? Don't lie...

How to turn on the reader's voice [grr..], listen to music on the Kindle, send and receive email, convert documents,
and organizing my growing stuff - all good information.

This is an excellent guide for the normal clueless. Michael, thank you for this and your blog.

I just received this small text and have attempted unsuccessfully to use it for several simple instructions. One reference regarding reading my e-mail, instructs me to go to the kindle web browser, yet provides no information on how to do this or where to find it. I searched the table of contents, again no help. The author uses lots of unnecessary words but provides minimal information on most topics I've tried to find. I have used this book for a number of years and it is very helpful. For those of us who do not plan extended stops, or travel around, it is nice to know where to find campgrounds and what is available. Of a particular help is one that took me a while to realize and that is the amount of available rv's sites compared to the amount of open sites. Many times rv's don't seem to be all that welcome in places thar are mostly permanent residents. So as you look at the campground information and it says, for example, 250 sites--50 available, it will be full or permanent residents. Don't get me wrong, that is fine if it is what you prefer. I, however, prefer to stay with rv's who are doing similar to what I am. I have found them to be much friendlier and helpful. This is no big revelation to many but it has been my observation over the past 10 years.

Not Very Useful as CAMPGROUND guide, March 15, 2010
Title should be changed to "RV Parks & Services" as this book is heavily slanted towards RV long term parks and NOT campgrounds. So, if you are a short term "camper", with or without an RV, you will spend a lot of time sifting through information that has absolutely little, if any, interest to you. As far as usefulness to long term RV "parkers" the internet, in my opinion, holds a much more useful and searchable database.

We buy this directory every year since we travel quite a bit. My wife (the navigator) prefers this directory over the Woodall's (both are produced by the same parent company) mostly because of the better layout. The stick-on state index tabs are tedious to put on but are helpful in quickly finding the state you are looking for. I wish the state locator maps were printed at the beginning of the state listings but all the maps are located toward the front of the book. I can understand why: they are in color and on a better grade paper. Just a little inconvenient to flip back and forth. Campground data provided is nearly always accurate. The Woodall's book has led us to a couple of dumpy campgrounds that weren't even listed in the Trailer Life directory. Seems like the TL Directory may have better reviewers.

Rating System Needs Improvement, May 7, 2010
Have used this directory for more years than I can remember. The user must take the CG rating with a grain of salt. When staying at a CG found in the directory, I have always wondered how the rating was arrived at, as there seems to be no connection between reality and the rating. Sometimes I think the rating is based on how much advertising the particular CG does with TL Enterprises. We spent the winter at a CG with a very good rating, however, the voltage was so low, we were unable to use our appliances. Also, the fact that there was a skeet shooting range 100yds from our site didn't seem to have entered into the rating. We thought we were in a combat zone until 10PM nights. The directory is great for locating the CG's, but don't put a lot of weight on the rating. Users of the directory should be able to submit rating cards for CG's they have visited.

It's better than nothing... This book is NOT a quick reference guide. It takes a lot of time to pour over the material. There's a lot of flipping back and forth over the material. Better use of tables, etc would be better.

Good but hard to use, July 7, 2010
I bought it so I could have an easier way of looking for campground around the area where I'd like to stay. I'd expect this catalog to have map of each state with location marked for each of the campground so I could just look at the map and know exactly what to look for. However, this is not the case. If you are looking at the state with tons of campgrounds(FL is one example), it will take to a while to figure out which one is in the area you care about.

Useful Directory, But Heavy!, June 13, 2010
This directory really came in handy on a recent vacation. Lots of useful information to help us decide on campgrounds and includes USFS, state park, private and public campgrounds with overall accurate ratings and lists of amenities. Since we go basic, it saved us money and the hassle of "overpriced" campgrounds with all the bells and whistles.

The additonal information on historical sites and attractions along the way was a bonus. The one downside was the overall size and excess weight of the directory, especially when that's a concern for many travelers. While you may gain arm strength lifting it up and down, after awhile it gets cumbersome. That said, you wouldn't want the type any smaller since it would be too hard for many to read in the vehicle or rv. Maybe a downloadable version in the future would be a solution.

Decent book, terrible index, November 13, 2009
As the book proclaims on its cover that it will tell you who wants what, you should know that there is a name index only. If you already know who you're looking for, this book provides a wealth of information on most but not all major agents; but if you you want to know which publishers and/or agents are interested in what material, you are out of luck. There is no idex for that. Know what you're getting.

Worth buying, October 24, 2009
I am brand new to the idea of writing and I picked up the 2009 edition of this book at the library. I really liked it and was excited to find the new 2010 edition here. I was happy to see that it really was updated and I found information I had not seen in the earlier edition. I especially like the fact that they list recent titles that the literary agents have sold. I found that very helpful. I also really like the type of questions that were asked of agents, as they were much more in depth than I had found in other books on literary agents. I found an agent listed with similar interests to mine. When I looked her up in other "literary agent" books, that specific personal information was not listed. Therefore, I might have missed out on an appropriate agent to query. I recommend this book.

Excellent Resource!, November 18, 2009
Jeff Herman's book is an excellent resource for writers and he offers much practical advice. He also "kicks it up a notch" by allowing us a glimpse into the personal lives of those who would buy our work and that is a very telling thing for a writer. He also offers solid help with writing a proposal (a most daunting task at times for us non-fiction writers) in an easy format. The only negative thing I've found is that unlike "The Writer's Market" his book offers no information on what each publisher pays (royalties, advance offered, etc.) and for those of us who are interested in such things this is a serious subject I wish was included. Otherwise, a great book I would highly recommend.

Worth buying, with caveats..., December 5, 2010
You're a writer. You need reliable contacts either for screenplays, novels, etc.

Herman has an excellent and professional approach to providing a listing, with useful information which goes well beyond most internet listings or other sources.

Unfortunately, he felt it necessary to provide all sorts of agent-centric viewpoints (mostly his own) about the business, which are not really useful at best, and at worst irritating.

Looking at listings, you'll just have to ignore the "worst client" categories he proposed to agents... where agents had the opportunity to reply with things like "sends packages impossible to open..." (what an incredibly difficult life agents has, with such a clientele...). This is really worthless stuff, designed to belittle people and make them feel like supplicants. Which, is ass-backwards. Agents should be grateful that writers ask them for help. Agents should see themselves as FULL partners (and lucky to be so...) in a project.

Don't be put off with, or buy into, the crybaby agent-centric stuff Herman throws out about how agents receive 90 percent garbage... that they have to "wade through" it. At least... don't buy how boring and painful that is. Because: That's. Their. Job.

Writers have a tough job, too. They spend months and even years developing an idea... character development, style, point of view, a general knowledge of humanity/the universe/etc... and agents take about 15 minutes to decide if they like it or not.

Don't be fooled. These people aren't "experts". They work the way a reader works in a bookstore: pick up... like/dislike. Put back or buy. But in their case, they decide on pick up or buy based on their personal contacts in publishing companies. They base their decisions on who they know, and the tastes of those people. In general, they don't know squat about the real intricacies of writing, except that -- to be fair -- they can recognize when something is acceptable or not (although not always, if you look at quite a bit of the stuff that gets published).

So... don't base your personal sense of self-worth... or model your writing approach... on that attitude. Write what you need to write, with all the conviction you have, and if it works, it works.

If it doesn't... it doesn't.

But ignore all this agent whining about how tough it is to winnow through the thousands of manuscripts they get. Poor them.

THIS book, is indeed useful because when Herman has gotten away from his ego essays (some of which are outright incomprehensible, especially when he launches into attempts at humor), he does provide a useful list.

Good luck. But don't be cowed by this agent-looking-down approach.

You're the writer. YOU'RE the one these people are making money on the backs of.

If You're Serious About Writing..., October 4, 2009
Jeff Herman consistently provides literary enthusiasts with a wealth of information, contacts, etc. I echo the sentiment of others who state that his guide book(s) is like a Bible for authors, published or aspiring. And it's almost just as thick. I'm often asked, "What direction do I take to get published?" Of course, this all depends upon what one is writing. However, the answers and much, much more lie within the covers of this book. HIGHLY recommended!!!!

Helpful if you want to know an agent's hobbies, November 9, 2010
I had gone through all the agents I could find for literary fiction on Agentquery.com, and an agent recommended that I buy this book which promises to give a writer a clearer understanding of what individual agents are really looking for. There is a lot of information in this book about their hobbies and what they think is "the client from hell," but just as with agency websites, there is very very little clarification about their true tastes in literature and what they are really looking for and what they SELL. A LOT say they are interested in literary fiction and you go to their websites and they focus mainly on horror or mystery. So, they may LIKE literary fiction, but they don't sell it. The book didn't take any of the work out of it for me, like having to research on-line after finding an agent's name, but it did give me access to more names, names of agencies I did not see listed anywhere on-line. So in one sense, it has helped because I can increase my queries by having more folks to send queries to, but too much in this book is irrelevant and silly. I don't need to know an agent's hobbies because kissing ass won't get me an agent,("dear agent, i love riding ponies, too!" wtf?) only finding someone who likes my kind of writing will and if they don't dig literary fiction or my type of writing, then I don't care what their hobbies are. Just not enough information about what each agent sells and the particular voice/style they like to work with.

I used this book's recommendations to snare my first literary agent. It's a clear and straightforward guideline on how to do just that with a comprehensive listing of agents and publishers.

It takes away all the excuses you might have for procrastination.

Essential to Your Professional Library, November 19, 2010
This is a book that should be in the library of every aspiring or professional writer. It provides a fresh and unusual perspective on the art and craft of becoming a published writer. However, I was fairly disappointed in the index organization, and encourage the publisher to redesign the index with a more critical eye to relevance. On the other hand, I must congratulate this publishing house on its refreshing booklist and independent perspective. It is most encouraging to see a small to mid-size independent publishing house that can accurately and competently gauge topics important to the current reading population. Most small publishers are hopeless at this, particularly ones such as Quest Books, with clearly incompetent business management, absent advertising management, and sadly outdated publishing management. If more small publishers followed the Sourcebooks model, the field would certainly be healthier and writers would be further encouraged to submit their material with the expectation that it would be competently handled and critically evaluated. This book is a nice resource to further that goal.

This guide to publishers, editors, and agents is better than any I've used before because of its in-depth look at the publishing world. The format is easy to read. There are many additional helps about query letters and summaries, as well as self-publishers. I especially like the "How would you describe the "author from hell" section. This book is well worth the money.

Tons of book publishing help!, December 16, 2009
I really recommend this book for anyone in the process of trying to get their book published and sold. Herman's book is packed with how-to, hints, suggestions and best of all, a rather unique manner of listing the literary agents. The method Herman uses lets the reader get acquainted with the agent, which of course is not an easy thing to do when we can't visit the agent in their office. But Herman's method did it for me. Made it easier to decide which literary agent to contact with a query letter, one-page synopsis and SASE. I just began (December 2009) the process of trying to get represented by a literary agent, but I'm confident it will happen now that I have Herman's book to guide and help me.

Big guide, but is focused on RV camping, September 11, 2010
Just so you understand my review, I don't think RV camping is camping. It's moving a house around. This guide is really for RV'ers, not for someone like me who wants to camp far away from RV'ers and the noise. I camp using my motorcycle.

Now, setting aside my bias, let me say one thing. WOW. This is a thorough, complete, huge guide. The dead tree version is hard to use (old school though) because there is just so much information. And I find how they organize the states odd. It took a while to figure out where California was located in the guide. Even me, who likes camping away from things, needs to find a more modern campground for showering, washing clothes, connecting to the internet. And this guide is good for that.

But the best thing is the CD which appears to be the whole book on one disk. Now this thing itself should get 10 stars. It's easy to search. It fits in a small area.

So, if you're into car or RV camping, this guide is perfect. If you want to find that secluded primitive campground in the Rockies, this isn't so useful. A solid 5 stars for the finding clean, modern, state of the art campgrounds. A solid 3 stars for those who search for the quiet place.

But that CD is just perfect, which I will carry when I need to find one of those modern campgrounds.

This directory is poorly organized. It didn't list all of the campgrounds in a area. It is sometimes impossible to find the town shown on the map in the directory itself. Since the directory is alphabetical, but looking for a campground is geographical, we found ourselves flipping between the map and among numerous pages within a state. It was even worse in areas bordering 2 states. We noticed many Forest Service campgrounds were missing.

Very poor, October 31, 2010
My wife and I find all the Woodall products geared to produce advertising revenue as opposed to serve the customer. Many many small or state campgrounds aren't listed merely because they wouldn't or couldn't afford the fees. Very poorly organized making it virtually impossible to find any campgrounds near where you are. Also, unlike previous directories, there are no charts or tables that provide an easy reference regarding ammenities.

We literally ended up throwing the book away in sheer frustration...

REALLY ENJOYED USING THE CD THAT CAME WITH THE BOOK. THE BOOK IS VERY THICK, BUT VERY INFORMATIVE. WE TOOK OUR LAPTOP ON VACATION WITH US AND IT WAS MUCH QUICKER TO POP THE CD IN AND SEARCH FOR A CAMPGROUND THAN IT WAS TO FLIP THROUGH THE BOOK. VERY IMFORMATIVE.

Disappointing, November 18, 2010
I purchased this directory to help find campgrounds while on the road when we didn't have internet access. I was disappointed to find that it listed so few campgrounds. It lists just a fraction of campgrounds that are available for any particular area. Very incomplete and not worth the purchase price.

Indispensible for RVers, November 10, 2010
When we first bought our RV 3 years ago, the dealer told us we needed Woodall's directory to help us plan trips. I rushed out to a book store and plunked down $30 for one, and it has been very helpful. On multi-state trips this year, we found much of the information in our edition was obsolete, so my husband remarked that we needed to check for a more recent edition. Imagine my delight to find a 2010 edition on Amazon for less than half the price I had paid for the old one. Although the book I purchased was listed as "used", it appeared brand-new, and we look forward to using it for a cross-country trip next year.

Amazon sent us a previously purchased copy. The CD envelope had been ripped open, but it was still there. Very disappointing that the book was not in "new" condition. I had expected this rather large book to have all campgrounds in it. It does not. The states are not aligned correctly, with Wisconsin at the back of the book and no where near Minnesota, Illinois,or Iowa. What is handy to use are the state maps showing the campgrounds that have paid to be in this book. I would not recommend purchasing this book. Beautiful production values, February 1, 2005
This is a joy to read, hold and behold. The first thing that struck the bibliophile in me was that lovely quality paper. It gives the book heft but is a pleasure to read. I got this as well as the Groves/Norton. Why? Because I set out to buy the Oxford Companion but saw that I could get 2 reference books for the price of the Oxford. The Harvard omits all the biographical entries so the 2 are complementary. The Harvard uses all that space to provide great in-depth articles. If I had to go for one I would choose the Harvard - nowadays the Bios can be had in an instant on the net, whereas the Harvard assimilates a lot of learning in its entries.

Wasn't sure at first..., June 14, 2005
I received this book as a graduation gift from my high school and junior high band directors. I knew it would come in useful since I am starting as a music education major in the fall, but I wasn't sure exactly how often I would use it.

Right away, I found myself able to find answers to little things I didn't know. I also have a violin student who asks questions about anything and everything. This has definitly come in useful with teaching him!

This book has everything, some times a little more than I wanted, but still has the answers I look for.

Indispensable, September 26, 2004
One has to appreciate the thoroughness and range of this new edition of the well-known reference source for all things musical save biographical data which this dictionary has traditionally excluded, but then it is not a biographical dictionary of which there are many that can be consulted. This dictionary is not just for information, but also primarily for education. Therefore, don't stop reading just because the information you are looking for is getting too detailed; try to learn from it.

Back around 1987 (or so), I walked into a local mega-bookstore to find a music dictionary that would help me navigate a couple of Renaissance and Medieval music books I was trying to read through. I'd written down various terms that I would use as the litmus test to gauge how effectively (clearly, concisely and thoroughly) each dictionary would be able to tell me what I needed and wanted to know, and/or how well it defined things I already knew well. So once I'd entered the store, I grabbed their three or four music dictionaries off the shelf and started comparing their enties for each of 8 or 10 musical terms/ideas. I found that the Harvard version was unsurpassed, and in fact rarely equaled in the quality of its entries. Oftentimes the other dictionaries flung around jargon; or their explanations were superficial, or would skirt some of the issues, assuming that I, for one, would already know what THEY were supposed to be explaining to me.
I remember after having bought the book, that whenever I needed to find out something, it would give me what I needed almost without fail. One example of this occurred on the day I wanted/needed to learn how to read and understand figured bass (having never looked into this before). I was doubting that the Harvard would give me what I needed, as it seemed on the surface to be so very complicated. Was I ever wrong! After reading the Harvard entry, I was reading through and playing Corelli on my keyboard sequencer (albeit slowly) within about 15 minutes. Although I had also conversed with a friend who was a composition major, that was for no more than a minute or so.

A dictionary isn't really that exciting, but this is truly a great resource. I'm a music education major getting my masters degree, and this book has really helped me to get a grasp on some of the information I'm studying. If you are a musician at all, especially a music teacher, invest in this book, you will use it!

I don't have a music degree, but took lessons from my accomplished pianist Mom for 8 years beginning on my 4th birthday. Since I don't have much theory knowledge, even though I've been playing the piano for over 48 years, I wanted a music reference book that I could also learn from. I am planning to add the Harvard Biographical Music Dictionary to my music collection, as this music dictionary doesn't give in-depth biographies on composers, since it is a MUSIC dictionary. This book is for anyone wanting to own a great music reference book and will be an invaluable addition to your music library.

I bought this book for my daughter. Our friend has a degree in music and received this book as a graduation gift back in 1984. Our daughter's piano teacher required this book for her. Our music major friend was impressed and told us it would probably be at least $50. Much to our surprise we found it here for $25. It is very professionally done. We found it to be college level at a great price. We are very very happy.

This is one of the classic volumes of encyclopedic music scholarship in a one-volume package. Another reviewer mentions this, but it is worth mentioning again: biographical information--and some very accurate biographical information--tends to be readily accessible on the Internet, but concise, accurate information about instruments, forms, genres, styles, and so on, is not always quite as reliable. In case there is a hyperinflation due to global influences against the dollar, we are purchasing silver dollars and bars on ebay. The added incentive to do this is to enjoy the numismatic experience in collecting.

In particular, the collection of US Silver Proof sets has been enjoyable, and the book is certainly a good guide to these sets, as well as other available silver investment vehicles. The sections on the American Eagle and the Morgan Silver Dollars gives one a quick lesson on the rare more valuable dates.

amazing go to guide book for coin prices. i was a little dissapointed that SOME of the prices ended at 2008. The book is 2010 it should include prices up to then or at least 2009 as well on all coins. Not to say it didn't have those as well. I also would like to see prices of lesser grades of coins as well. Other then that the book is great i take it everywhere i go!!!

I had no prior experience determining the rareity of coins, so this guide was a real help. There are plenty of pictures and descriptions. I first tried using a different guide from the public library. This one is far superior.

We are fulltime RVer's-which means we live in the RV year round. I was using an old Next Exit and had this book recommended by another fulltime rv couple. The 2 major assets of this particular Interstate book are each interstate follows through the states and are in numerical order starting with I-4 ending with the city loop road I-710 and number 2-every few pages there is a spot inserted with enough room to write your own notes. No other books that I've used have that feature. OH and I forgot it's also spiral bound, makes page flipping a breeze.

I purchase this through Amazon which was the best price!

"Exit Now" instead of "Next Exit", June 29, 2010
We have been RV'ing for about 6 years, the last 3 in a 40 foot motorhome. Until we purchased the 2010 "Exit Now: Interstate Exit Directory" we relied upon a similar publication called "The Next Exit", which we considered an essential part of our travels. However, since purchasing the 2010 "Exit Now: Interstate Exit Directory" and relying upon it on our last trip (2300 miles), the paper-back "Next Exit" has become history. The 2010 "Exit Now: Interstate Exit Directory" is much easier and faster to use. The large spiral-binding allows the pages to be easily turned and the book lays flat while open.

To illustrate the directory's ease of use I will use an example. In the "Next Exit" one would first look up Georgia, find I-20 and follow it to the Alabama line where one would then be required to look up Alabama, find I-20, follow it to the Mississippi line, then look up Louisiana, find I-20, follow it to the Texas line, and then look up Texas, find I-20 and follow it to your destination. Each state traveled through required a new "lookup" as opposed to the new 2010 "Exit Now: Interstate Exit Directory" in which one simply looks up I-20 and follows it all the way from Georgia to Texas simply by turning the pages and following one continuous "thread" through Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and into Texas and your destination.

If you travel the interstate highway system much at all the 2010 "Exit Now: Interstate Exit Directory" is a must have.

Ever been way out in the middle of nowhere, road weary, hungry, and longing for a *good* cup of coffee? Just flip open the book and check what's down at the next exit: nothing. The exit after that? Gotcha! A Starbucks and a decent restaurant on the north side of the highway. That's how this book works. We borrowed one from friends for a recent long road trip, and bought our own on the way home. Tells you about what food and lodging is available within a few miles of the exit - for EVERY exit on the Interstates. Awesome find.
Instead of pulling off to see what you can find, you will know that if you go, say, to the third exit up ahead, you will find what you are looking for. Saves time and reduces stress.

We bought Next Exit in 2004 and have used it a lot while driving the Interstate highway system. In general, it has proven to be accurate and useful, but has become very dogeared, torn, and worn due to the "newsprint" grade of the paper and conventional binding. Also, Next Exit takes you from one side of a state to the other on a given highway. When you reach the border of a state, you have to search out the next state to continue your journey.
Exit Now is slightly more expensive which gave me pause but I decided to buy it based on other reviews.
It is:
1) Printed on heavier paper and should be more able to take day-to-day wear;
2) Arranged by highway, not state - if you are driving I-10 coast-to-coast, you don't have to find Florida, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California - just find I-10 and follow the journey coast-to-coast!;
3) Spiral bound making it easy to open to a given page and keep it there. The plastic spiral binding should be less susceptible to bending that might occur with a metal spiral binding.
We have already used it a couple of times, plus have checked it for accuracy against Interstate interchanges in our area and found it very complete.
We look forward to using this upgrade to Next Exit as we travel this winter and for the next few years.
While we are not RV'ers, we note that it is Good Sam approved and lists businesses associated with RV's and parking areas suitable for parking large rigs.

Exit Now would be a good resource if that was all that was available. Having the interstates run continuously is helpful, but Next Exit tells you which cities run along the interstates without having to look at each exit number. I also think Next Exit has more information.

This is extremely helpful when rv traveling and need to know the places that have diesel fuel. Combined with a gps it makes life much easier on the road. Well constructed and easy to follow.

I would prefer this book if it didn't have one glaring flaw. It is missing about a hundred miles of exits from Tennessee to Virginia on I-81! My advice is to not buy online unless you have seen it in a bookstore for yourself to make sure the routes/exits you take are in there.

We travel the US frequently, using interstate highways primarily. This book is better for us than "Next Exit" because it is listed by highway number rather than state. Thus, when you travel on I-77 from No. Carolina into So. Carolina, there is no changing pages and trying to find your location again. The spiral binding is also very nice.

We travel in a sedan, so we don't need the RV helps, but I'm sure they come in handy for those with large vehicles.

We bought one several years ago, and it was time to update it. The new ones are spiral bound, and seem a bit easier to use. It has really come in handy for large parking lot notifictions. It can be a mess to park in some spots with a camper, and this really helps.

I was extremely pleased with what I got when I purchased this guide. It gives a detailed description of the anatomy, history, and use of every item in Star Wars. This guide is broken into sections. These are ranged weapons, melee weapons, starship and planetary weapons, superweapons, defenses and armor, security, and other equitment. The ranged weapons section covers everything from the simple dart shooter to the lethal disruptor rifle. Melee is similar, and it gives many descriptions of Yuuzhan Vong melee weapons(ugh). Starship and planetary weapons section covers many things, and the superweapons section is a very interesting section. I value this guide over the Vehicles and Vessels guide. Its setup is more structured and organized. In the beginning of this guide you can find a Major Manufacterers guide. Ian Fullwood has done an excellent job illistrating this guide. You can see everything. I strongly reccomend this guide to anyone who likes Star Wars, and it really helped me get into Star Wars. A must-have.

But it didn't have the technical specifications that you would expect from a Star Wars Manual. Astounding Book, January 8, 2010
The WRTH 2010 book, like its predecessors, covers an enormous amount of territory, providing detailed, almanac-type, details about most aspects of broadcasting. The book is a bridge between the community of global broadcast stations and their audiences. For the short-wave-listener, it is a required reference source. The book is neatly organized, very reader-friendly, considering the amount of information it provides and is absolutely a pleasure to browse through. I hope this institution of a book carries on through many many future years.

I've been a faithful Passport reader for the few years that shortwave listening has been a hobby of mine. Come to find out this year that the 2010 edition is just not happening.

Anyway, I went looking for a new source of information on what's on on shortwave radio. Discovered the WRTH. While I don't like the organization quite as much as I like that of Passport's blue pages, it's nonetheless proven quite reliable and I really don't know what I'd do without it as far as shortwave listening goes. Definitely something any radio enthusiast needs to own, and definitely something that's going to become a yearly purchase for me.

Are you new to SW-- shortwave listening? Want a hint as to what's on 15250 kHz at 2300 GMT / UTC? Where and when can one find broadcasts in English or Spanish, French, or German? The World Radio TV Handbook, WRTH 2010 has all that information and more.

I began listening to shortwave in 1964 and had no idea of how to find the BBC or any other international broadcaster. I had some hints from a friend's dad who was a HAM or amateur radio operator. A small paperback AARL introduction to ham radio had more information on how to make a radio and aerial and pass an exam or code and theory than information on SWL.

Eventually I was lucky enough to pick up programs from Radio Nederland and HCJB just about how to listen to SWL and tips for DX or distance listening. I heard also about WRTH. It was 1974 when I found and bought my first copy of WRTH. It opened me to so much information. For a listener, here is how I use WRTH.

First section is articles about all aspects of radio from broadcasting to receiver reviews to maps, where to listen bands, and which bands are better to listen to at a particular time of day.

The 2nd section is an alpha list of domestic governmental and commercial broadcasters by country. This is where I find US and Canada AM stations.

A 3rd section is specific to international broadcasting--those broadcasts specific to an foreign audience. For example, RCI, Radio Canada International has e-mail, web address, fax & phone, leading personnel, and what kind of QSL (like a broadcasting post-card with your name and details confirmed of your report). (Yes some people do collect these. My first QSL was from Radio Nederland Happy Station).

A 4th section is TV which I just scan over. Here though you can find addresses of leading broadcasters.

Finally there is a frequency and references tables. As I'm constantly in and out of these pages with color pencil to underline and circle stations I've heard, I use flags to easily move from section to section. My flags are Canada domestic, International, SW Frequencies, English programs, and international transmission locations. (BBCWS broadcasts in English to the East Asia from 2300 on 15360 kHz from Thailand).

Now you might say, why buy a book when most of the information is already on the web and changes in the Spring (there are 2 broadcasting seasons each year--A10 is current from 31 March 2010). I don't know about you but I don't print everything I find nor want to store pages and pages of copy paper. A book once a year (and yes [...] will provide you with updated information) keeps everything together. BTW, the book does not interfere with radio signals the way PCs and other electricals do. Do I buy it every year: I would wait for the first copies to hit the old Portland Radio Supply around the first of the year while now it might be two.

The point is that if you are really interested in SWL, DX, and listening directly to the world AND not have all your clicks of the mouse leaving tracks, radio is still a fine alternative for acquiring information. Finally, for accuracy, DSWCI's (Danish Shortwave Club International) survey found that the information in WRTH was more than 98% accurate, an accuracy missing from many web sites. Buy a copy: it's WRTH your while.

The Kindlefrog does it again! Here's a Kindle guide that's quite, quite different:
It's a VERY quick guide for new Kindle owners that absolutely won't drag you through long-winded writings. Much more concise than Amazon's own guide, it still covers most ALL the "best ways", tricks and extras that you need, or want to know.

Quick and concise for a paper due tomorrow or just for a quick review of the basics. Its much easier to get a hold of the MLA thing with this book and then move on to the bigger more explanatory ones later. It will fit into your back pocket or even your top shirt pocket. Its that small.

Certainly a Help, October 11, 2009
This very small book is certainly a help in interpreting the new 7th edition of the MLA guide, but the reader has to thumb through the book to find each entry type. It needs a table of contents that indicates what page the database entry or book entry is on. This pocket guide is good in a pinch but not as thorough as Diana Hacker's pocket handbooks. Unfortunately, Hacker revised her book just before the 7th edition came out.

This handbook is great. Last month I needed help with accurately citing and formatting a research paper but I didn't have the time to read an entire 361 page MLA style book. I needed something concise and reasonable. When I received the handbook, I was very impressed. The author packed a prodigious amount of information and examples into such an easy to carry around booklet. It has clear, concise instructions as well as many illustrations. The book is easy to understand and navigable. I highly recommend it for anyone who wants or needs to learn how to properly reference and write an MLA style paper.

Unfortunately, it was overpriced and just a sketch of what the MLA actually contains, rather than explanations, etc. If the price had been much lower, I would have understood it was just a brief sketch of the overall format. Unfortunately, it is of little use to me as is.

Very Cheaply Made and Not Too Helpful, September 10, 2009
I just received this book and it is no where near worth the money spent. It seems like a good deal and then you get it only to realize it sucks. It is very cheap and poorly made, looks like it wouldn't last very long at all. The text in it is faded and slanted on almost every page. I don't know why anyone would think the content of it is helpful either. It gives barely any information compared to the real MLA Handbook. I knew when I bought it I wasn't going to get all the information as the real handbook but I never expected it to be only like 5% of the information, maybe not even that. The description says it was "organized for speed and brevity" but I found the organization extremely annoying and hard to find what I was looking for quickly. Overall, it was just a horrible disappointment! I will be returning it!

Poorly Organized, Inadequate Explanations, March 10, 2009
I've spent the semester referring to this handbook and it has failed to impress. The brevity of the material and its poor organization make it hard to follow, especially when you're in the heat of paper writing. Multiple, sometimes unrelated formats are squeezed together on the same page and the "Potential Problems" sections--footnotes that address special case citations--show up too rarely to be useful. The instructions for the citations and the templates/examples provided rarely match up (especially in the "Electronic Sources" section--a shame, considering how important the internet is to modern research). The instructions will ask for a periodical's volume number, for example, but none of the examples will include volume numbers. Furthermore, the "compact" format is useless--the booklet doesn't stay open without being strong-armed, which makes it difficult to refer to while typing. What's the point?

Clear and Comprehensive, January 28, 1999
Whether you are a novice seeking to learn the fundamentals of banking, or an active professional who has just encountered an unusual term, you will want this book. Each definition is short (only a paragraph or so), but most contain links to other terms, so the reader can gain a progressively deeper understanding of how terms interrelate. I also like the frequent inclusion of dates (e.g., the year a particular law was passed). The definitions are authoritative--based on a number of leading accounting, banking, and financial entities identified in the introduction. It's worth far more than its bargain price. I look forward to the next edition (Year 2000?). Keep up the good work!

Working in an IT company catering to bankers I bought this book to help understand their lingo. I have to say it hasn't disappointed yet. It is also very up to date the latest IT/banking terms. If you were to read all the definitions in this book you would probably know more than you banker. A great reference. Buy it!

Don't Let the Title Fool You, August 4, 2001
This can almost be considered an inexpensive textbook. It not only defines, but explains the terms in a simple, easy to understand format. Although in dictionary form, it consistently relates the terms to one another so the reader will understand how the concepts interwind. Includes financial and banking terms.

Exellent resource, January 9, 2007
I use this in a training class about bank documentation. It is very helpful and comprehensive. It defines terms in concise and easy to understand words. Even a seasoned banker can learn something from this dictionary.

I've been in banking for nearly 13 years and have sometimes struggled with much of the terminology used during corporate functions, meetings, or just watching CNBC. Whether a novice or a veteran, it's something that should be in your briefcase, pocket book, or in your desk for quick reference. This is a "NO BS" assessment!

I have had a serious love affair with New York my entire life. I visit often and plan to move there. This guide is fantastic, with tons of interesting and affordable places to check out. I have read every guide there is on NYC and by and large they contain the reviews of the same hotels and theater options. This book offers really unique places that are also more affordable than most of the stuff you find in the guidebooks. You can find the standard upscale restaurant, hotel and broadway show reviews on many sites and books, there is nothing out there like this guide, I cannot wait to go again in a few months and visit some of the places reviewed in the book. It makes me miss NY every time I pick it up.

I am not even halfway through this book and I have already flagged dozens of pages. I am a native New Yorker and there are so many things in this book that sound awesome that I have never heard of before now. I can't wait to check out so many of these things, I wish the days were longer so I could spend more time using this guide. It has everything, from bicycle polo, to cheap vegan eats to the best places to get a slice all over the city. You'll also get great snarky commentary from some of the funniest writers in the world of zines. It's so cheap, I can't see any reason why you wouldn't get this book. It's AWESOME.
